El 25 de mayo pasado tuvo lugar en la residencia argentina en Berna la celebración del 213 aniversario de la Revolución de Mayo.

El encuentro contó con la participación de la Ministro de Salud de la Nación, Dra. Carla Vizzotti, el Subsecretario de las Américas de la Cancillería suiza, Embajador Mirko Giulietti, el Representante Permanente ante los Organismos Internacionales en Ginebra, Embajador Federico Villegas, embajadores y miembros del cuerpo diplomático acreditados en Berna, personalidades suizas, así como alrededor de 250 ciudadanos argentinos radicados en Suiza.

El Embajador de Argentina en Suiza, Alberto D’Alotto pronunció un discurso alusivo y luego se efectuó la promesa a la bandera nacional por parte de un grupo de niños argentinos. A continuación se ofreció un asado criollo y tuvo lugar un espectáculo de tango y folklore.

Ladies and Gentlemen

We celebrate today the 213th anniversary of the May Revolution. This historical event took place after the Napoleonic invasion of Spain followed by the abdication of the King Ferdinand VII. Since that moment on the people of Argentina decided to form a government of its own and this was the starting point of our history as an independent nation.

All along these centuries we went, as any other country in the world, through periods of stability and prosperity as well as moments of turbulences, social unrest and confrontation. We faced dictatorships and violations of human rights but thanks to the efforts of our people we have built a strong democracy with full enjoyment of fundamental civil liberties. This year we celebrate forty years of the restoration of democracy in 1983.

Argentina carries out a foreign policy of cooperation with all countries in the world and plays an important role in multilateral forums in defense of international law and peace and against all kind of invasions, occupation of foreign countries and violations of human rights

We represent an open and free society proud of its cultural traditions, its talented scientists, writers, musicians, artists and sports achievements as we still celebrate our third football World Cup won in Qatar last December.

This year 2023 our citizens we’ll be called to decide in free and fair elections who is going to be the next president of Argentina. This election takes place in a difficult moment for our economy, with high levels of inflation that impacts severely in the life of our people. Let’s hope that the government we will choose can find the path of stability, development and social inclusion that our society wishes and that it certainly deserves.

Ladies and gentlemen

This is the last time I will be addressing you from this position. In some weeks more I´ll be returning to Argentina to retire after forty years of diplomatic service.

I am happy that my last post has been in this beautiful country, Switzerland. For the third time in my career, previously in Geneva, I learned to respect and admire this democratic nation whose commitment for peace and for the rule of international law is recognized worldwide.

These last months have been of intense cooperation and dialogue between our two nations. The economic bilateral commission met in Buenos Aires last November and the political consultations took place also in Buenos Aires last April.

Both meetings highlighted the excellent level of our relations based on our shared values, our coincidences about the international situation and the prospect of an increase in our trade if we are able to conclude the free trade agreement we have been negotiating for years. Other agreements in air transport and in social security are also now being finished.

I’d like to thank the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the different departments in the Swiss government for the respect and friendship they always showed towards Argentina and its embassy and it is my wish that our bilateral relation keeps developing for the common wealth of our two countries.

 Thank to you all for being here today and for giving me the chance to say good bye.

Estimados compatriotas

Quiero agradecerles por su presencia nuevamente en esta residencia argentina y expresarles mi reconocimiento y respeto por la labor que desarrollan en Suiza.

 Ha sido muy grato para mí conocer en estos años a destacadas personalidades argentinas, del arte, de la ciencia, de las empresa, de la academia y de otras profesiones y actividades. Todos ponen en evidencia la calidad de la educación argentina y de los recursos humanos de nuestro país.

Nuestra patria atraviesa momentos de gran dificultad y la crisis económica y la inflación castigan a la población, en particular a la de menores recursos. Es en estos momentos en los que es más necesario que nunca promover el diálogo y la concordia entre los argentinos para poder enfrentar la situación y estar en condiciones de alumbrar un futuro de prosperidad para las próximas generaciones.

Nuestra embajada está abierta para la celebración de los comicios en octubre próximo para que participen en la elección soberana de nuestro pueblo que decidirá seguramente un rumbo hacia una sociedad más justa y solidaria.

Como señalé antes esta es la última ocasión en la que hablaré desde este lugar pues en pocas semanas vuelvo a la Argentina para retirarme, luego de cuarenta años en el servicio exterior. Estoy agradecido a la Cancillería argentina por todas las oportunidades que me brindó y especialmente por permitirme concluir mi carrera en este maravilloso país, Suiza.
